T.B. : SPACE TRAVELERS & other affiliated shit

Thanks to Josh Spear for posting about this cool show in Denver tonight. It's T.B. (Todd Michael Berger) of the wonderful Joy Engine, and it's at Installation shoe store- which incidentally, also looks really rad, because I love shoes. Go check it out!

Bwana Spoons : Welcome to California

I'm a huge Bwana Spoons fan, and was stoked to meet him at Comic-Con this year. He has a new show opening next week:

"Welcome to California"
All new paintings by
Bwana Spoons and Justin "Scrappers" Morrison

Opens Sept 7th (first friday) 6-9pm

Grass Hut Gallery
811 e. Burnside
Portland, OR

Bwana Spoons and Justin "Scrappers" Morrison are coming outta the closet. The secrets out, they're from California. They've kept it a secret because they thought Oregonians might get mad and hate on them with a "Locals Only" attitude. As it turns out though, everyone's been super nice and welcoming here in Portland. So take this show as a welcome right back at you.
In their new body of work the Cali-boys explore and reflect everything rad and lame about California. That covers everything from surfing legend Moon-Doggy to gangsta rap legend Easy-E.
Using vivid colors and bold icons in their new painting, Bwana and Scrappers celebrate their first show together in Grass Hut gallery (the galley they both own and operate).

He's also got these super rad shoes out now... I want some!

Miss Teen South Carolina...

This isn't about art, or cool toys, or Blythe, or anything in the usual realm of my posts. It is, however, Monday, and Mondays kind of suck, so I wanted to post something funny for all my lovely readers. I had to watch this several times, but I just ended up feeling sad for America once I gave it a lot of thought. Just watch it once though, and it's really funny.

Sanna Annukka

Oh Joy featured the amazing work of Finnish/ English artist Sanna Annukka today. She has been getting a lot of press lately, stemming from her wonderful Keane album covers, and recent feature in Vogue. You can now purchase prints in her webshop, and future items will include stationary, wallpaper, and fabric wall hangings. Sanna is definitely someone to keep an eye on!

Derek Albeck

I am really liking the work of Southern California artist Derek Albeck. I love the clean lines and super-sophisticated color palette. Check out his site for news about upcoming shows, and samples of his paintings and sculpture.

Irana Douer

These hand painted teacups are absolutely amazing! I found them on Decor8, and they are made by the wonderful illustrator Irana Douer, from Argentina. I want to order one, but I can't seem to decide which one I like best. I love the tree, but also the bloody nose... perhaps I will have to wait and order 2! You can buy prints of Irana's work as well, on the Thumbtack Press site.

Aline "Yumi" Yamada

Design is Mine author Summer always has great artist spotlights. I was especially taken with the work of Aline "yumi" Yamada. You can purchase wonderful prints on her Etsy shop, here. She is also exhibiting at Tiny Canary, an indie design fair in Columbus this September.

Irregular Choice : Blythe

A bit off the beaten path of my usual posts, but I couldn't resist. I looove the Blythe shoes by Irregular Choice.

I know that in a perfect world, one in which I could actually walk in shoes such as these gorgeous blue heels, I would wear these everyday.

Alas, I am more of a Chuck Taylor sorta gal, so I may have to settle upon this Vans'esque style. Either way, if you wore these, wouldn't you just smile every time you looked at your feet!?

Giant Robot LA & NY Shows this weekend

Opening this weekend at GRNY

Susie Ghahremani Art Show

Teacher’s Pets

August 18, 2007 – September 12, 2007

Saturday, August 18, 6:30 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.

Themes of the show will include patterns and fine detail, animals and nature, and interior spaces with domesticated wildlife. Ghahremani titled it “Teacher’s Pets” because she takes imaginary animals and teaches them how to do her favorite things: play the piano, make origami, ride a bike, swing in a hammock without falling out. Nearly 200 paintings, soft sculptures, unframed line drawings, framed work, wood pieces, and miniatures will be on display.

Opening this weekend at GR2 (LA)

Misaki Kawai Art Show

Sporty Club

August 18 – September 12, 2007

Reception: Saturday, August 18, 6:30 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.

Kawai, who splits her time between Osaka and New York City, has a playful, youthful style that is applied on a grown-up scale. Her naïve-looking sculptures built from cardboard, fabric, found objects, and 99-cent-store purchases resemble children’s drawings come to life. Likewise, her illustration is raw but powerful and innocent but smart. Her work has shown at Boston’s ICA and Houston’s MFA as well as a Macy’s window in New York City. It has also been reproduced in publications by McSweeney’s, Watarium, and The Ganzfield, as well as T-shirts by 2K Gingham.

This will be her first solo show in Los Angeles.

New! Weiner Wallet!

This just came in! He turned out adorable! Only $16! Buy yours here!

Noferin : Tales of Discovery

The lovely Noferin have their solo show opening this weekend in Melbourne. The preview photos are amazing! They are wonderful people, and super talented, so if you are close to Melbourne, you must go and see them!!!
I am posting lots of photos, because I am sad I can't be there, so photos must suffice!

I <3 F.O.T.C.

I am back! After a lovely surprise trip to Mexico City for my birthday/anniversary, I am back home in Los Angeles. The first thing I did upon my return was watch the episode I missed of Flight of the Conchords, which is just about my most favorite thing in the world right now! (only 3 episodes left, boo!)

I stumbled upon the Conchords' Myspace page, so I grabbed some photos and clips to post on here, out of sheer, shameless adoration. Enjoy.

Misery : "Mighty Monster Masquerade"

Misery's work for Illicit in New Zealand has gotten really popular lately. I see girls in her cute tees and carrying her totes all the time, and she recently designed a line for Blue Q. Misery's new show, 'Mighty Monster Masquerade" opens this week, and runs through August 18th. It's in New Zealand, at Alleluya Cafe, St Kevins Arcade. Also, check out the Misery myspace page for more updated info on shows, etc.

Yumiko Kayukawa : "World Wide Enemy"

Yumiko Kayukawa has a solo show this weekend at The Shooting Gallery in San Francisco! This is an amazing opportunity to see her work, because most of her shows are in Japan. I have always thought her paintings of girls and animals were super cool, and I wish I could attend the opening reception!

"World Wide Enemy"
The Shooting Gallery
Opens August 11, 2007
Reception 7-10 pm

Apak : Solo Shows

Ayumi and Aaron from Apak both have solo shows opening this weekend in Portland. Ayumi's show is 'My Secret Pocket Journey', at Grasshut and Aaron's show is 'Imagination Machine', at Moshi Moshi. If you are in Portland, you should definitely check them both out.

Treeson's 2nd Birthday!

I love vinyl toys, and I own a lot of them, but none of them make me super happy the way my Treeson toys do! Every time I look at them, I just love them more and more. Today I was looking at the art of Bubi Au Yeung , my Flickr friend, and the creator of my beloved Treeson. Turns out, Treeson has a birthday next week, on August 8th, and my birthday is August 7th, what a coincidence! There is a show up in Hong Kong right now, in honor of Treeson's birthday! Contributing artists are among some of my favorites, including Tado, Jon Burgerman, Meomi, Gaston Caba, and Dan Goodsell (Mr. Toast)! Oh, I wish I could go!!!
