Of Montreal : Wraith Pinned to the Mist and Other Games

I am a little behind on this one, but I just watched the Of Montreal video for "Wraith Pinned to the Mist and Other Games" and it's totally amazing. I love the song, too!

Deth P. Sun : The Sand and The Stars

Opening Tomorrow!:
Deth P. Sun at GRSF, September 15 - October 10
Reception: Saturday, September 15, 6:30 pm - 10:00 pm

Giant Robot is proud to present The Sand and The Stars, an art show by Deth P. Sun at GRSF.

Deth P. Sun's new collection of acrylic paintings on panels brings epic landscapes and cosmic occurrences into a private and personal world. Influenced by David Attenborough, as well as the Moomin series and films of Terry Gilliam, Deth seeks to create a fantasy world as a reflection of his own experiences and worldview. It is a place where cold mountains loom under the stars, cloaked figures arrive with the night, and lone dreamers struggle--a place where hope and belief still shine in dark times.

Deth P. Sun is always incredible... there are some photos of these new works on his flickr account, here.

My Kind of Vending Machine!

I previously posted about how much I wanted to go to Hotel Tomo in San Francisco. My main reasoning was because the whole place is covered with art by PCP, who I love! Little did I know that the hotel is well stocked with Giant Robot vending machines!!!! How awesome! Instead of waking up with a craving for Ruffles, you can wake up and go buy an Ai Yamaguchi tee, or an Uglydoll! What a great idea...

Tech Babble

I have a tech-obsessed boyfriend, and he is always trying to get me excited about all of the new little gadgets he finds. This weekend, we are headed to Wired Next Fest, which I am actually really looking forward to. This week, he has been raving about Sony's new little toy, the Rolly, which is an MP3 player, roll-around robot thingie, and I can't describe it much better than that because it doesn't make all that much sense to me. The promo video is cute to watch, but still leaves me a little confused.

We have a PS3, which I have never played, because all they released for it is car games and war games, and I don't like either of those. I did hear that Loco Roco is coming out pretty soon though, and I can't wait for that! The characters are adorable!

Compound : Digmeout Rides Again

If you are in the Portland area, you should totally check out this show, Digmeout Rides Again, now at Compound Gallery. It looks really amazing!

Artists Include: Cho-Chan, Mitsuru Saigusa, Ryuji Ohtani, Ippei Gyobui, Teriyaki, Kazuko Taniguchi, Madoka Kinoshita, Neri, Makiko Kishino, Kana Ohtsuki, Yoshihisa Nakai, Nishi Shuku, and Hazuki Miyahara.

From the press release:
Five young artists from Digmeout, one of the most successful art agencies in Japan, will be flying into Portland for their 4th annual American show on the First Thursday of September 2007. They represent the chosen few from an annual contest in which 5000 hopefuls enter their illustrations, paintings, and digital art for the chance to design for companies like Sony, Nissan, and Panasonic.

This art opening, displaying the work of the 13 artists chosen from their 150 represented artists, marks the 4th collaboration between Digmeout and Portland's Compound Gallery. Last year's Digmeout show was fully covered and featured by Japan's primary television station, Fuji TV, and was Compound's most successful art show in 2006.

Compound's owner Katsu Tanaka first initiated this relationship with Digmeout in an attempt to provide an opportunity that most upcoming Japanese artists would not otherwise have - American exposure. "Most of the artists showing with Digmeout are making their American debut", says Tanaka "many US companies have shown interest in these artists because they admired their work at our shows, and some of the artists are currently working on projects with these companies".

The art opening features a The magazine spotlights the artwork of the 12 artists and furthers Digmeout's mission to expose the young artists of Osaka, Japan. The opening reception will be held on Thursday, September 6th at 7:00 pm and the show runs through September 31.

Compound Gallery was founded in 2001 to provide a venue to expose fresh and upcoming urban and pop art to the Pacific Northwest. The gallery exhibits a variety of genres and new works by local, national, and international artists.

Digmeout is a visual artist excavation project promoted by FM802, an Osaka-based radio station. Digmeout and FM802's goal is to assist young artists and to expose the art and culture of Osaka, rather than being overwhelmed by the constant flow of Tokyo.

Catalina Estrada & Paul Smith

Man, oh man, is this Catalina Estrada / Paul Smith collaboration gorgeous, or what!? I have posted about Catalina's absolutely stunning work before, but I can't get enough of this new line. It is amazing. I can't even begin to fathom how it is all printed, but it turned out perfect. I am quite impressed that Paul Smith had the insight to hire someone as wonderful as Catalina to do this line. She has more photos of the line on her Flickr, here.

Poika

I was poking around the Unazukin website today, and I stumbled upon Poika, another super-cute toy from Bandai. I can't tell exactly what it is- I think it's a little candle like character that pops up out of a base piece (?) but she is so cute, it doesn't matter! There is some little animations to watch, and wallpapers to download, all here. Does anyone have one of these, or know what they are??

Fawn Gehweiler @ Outre Gallery

I have always been a fan of Fawn Gehweiler, and I am digging this new show, now up at Outre Gallery in Melbourne. The pieces from the show are now online, so go check them out!

Ephemera @ Gallery Nucleus

This weekend at Gallery Nucleus!

This Saturday September 8 is the Opening Reception of "Ephemera" an exhibition featuring the internationally recognized talents of Audrey Kawasaki and Fuco Ueda.

Audrey and Fuco will both have brand new original work on display. There will also be new as well as limited previously released prints available by both artists.

This show is going to be AMAZING.

Kid Robot kinda sucks...

I have to finally post about this, because it has been irking me for awhile now. I like the toys KidRobot makes. I like that they find awesome people to work with. But, well, I don't like KidRobot. I don't like their attitudes, like they are doing you a huge favor letting you purchase something from them, and I am so annoyed at everything they make being sold out 3 minutes after it's released. I wanted to buy a Space Invader Dunny this week, but of course, already gone. I can buy him from other vendors, and I would rather give them my business anyway, I just wanted to vent a bit about stupid KidRobot and their stupid ways of doing business. They are especially bad at Comic Con, when the lines to get anything from them start 6 hours before the item is actually going to be sold, making it impossible for fellow vendors to get anything, and then when it's sold out, it's like a big joke to them that all these people waited for nothing. Come on people! You are making toys for rad artists who would never treat their fans this way. Just be nice and be thankful that people are lining up to buy your shit in the first place!

Okay, done with my rant.

Fiona Hewitt : Dumpling Dynasty

Ooooh these new products by the amazing Fiona Hewitt are absolutely gorgeous! The Dumpling Dynasty characters are featured on wallets, sewing kits, shopping bags, tea sets, and more. See the whole line here. I can't decide which I like best, but the wallet, pencil case and baking kit are definitely up there!

Rinee Shah

Again, thanks to NotCot.org for this post...
A truly lovely animation about a girl & her polar bear fighting the evil forest. All of Rinee Shah's animations fit seamlessly with their music, but this new one is my favorite. All of them are worth watching though, so do that here.

poop pandas

I looooooove panda bears. Every time I go on vacation, I make sure to visit the zoo if it has a panda. (International pandas are the best kind, sorry San Diego!)
I found this article via NotCot.org, and it made me chuckle. I'd probably buy one of these, but could you get it through customs?

Staff at a Panda breeding facility in Sichuan province, China, have come up with a rather novel way of ridding themselves of the tonne-a-day waste that their bears produce.

Rather than just dumping the stuff, the workers are turning the bear poo into trinkets and models, fashioning the stinky material into anything from picture frames to Olympic logos. The talented lot are even making miniature pandas out of the stuff.

The stinky gifts are then sold on to tourists visiting Chengdu panda sanctuary. 'We used to spend at least £400 a month to get rid of the droppings but now they can prove lucrative as half of them will be sold as souvenirs,' said Jing Shimin from the centre.

haha, a real-life pooh bear :)
