Junko Mizuno's "Venus Cake"

Photobucket

There's a fantastic new solo exhibition by Junko Mizuno happening right now at Magic Pony's Narwhal Projects. Runs through April 20th.

From the press release:
VENUS CAKE
Junko Mizuno Solo Exhibition
Narwhal welcomes Japanese artist Junko Mizuno for her second Canadian exhibition Venus Cake : Junko Mizuno's Food Obsession. As the first body of work in her Food Obsession series, Mizuno takes us through a personal, psychedelic journey through delightfully dark food fetishes from an ornate whipped cream Ouroboros to fish carved sushi schoolgirls and a sadistically delicious pancake kitchen. With a decorative graphic sensibility that evokes both American and Japanese pop culture, Mizuno combines cuteness, gore and eroticism within an oeuvre that includes comics, painting, drawings, animation and toys. Influenced by vintage shojo manga, folktales, horror and pop art, Mizuno creates fairy tales where erotically adorable pin-ups prance naively through imagined worlds, battling and cohabiting with the dark energy that surrounds them. With realized sexuality, hunger and violence, Mizuno’s girls combat fatal relationships with desires and demons. Playing off our fascination with the cute and the macabre, strong-willed vixens flaunt their charms, and fight for their beliefs, misfit protagonists for the modern day woman.

DIY Plush workshop with Monster Factory @ Magic Pony

DIY Plush workshop with Monster Factory at Magic Pony in Toronto.

This looks so, so awesome, I would love to attend this! I think Monster Factory, hands down, creates the most original plush designs out there, and each character has so much personality and charm. I would love to learn from the masters!

About the workshop:
Led by the acclaimed toy designers Monster Factory, each day of our four-day program explores the creation of plush toys from concept to construction, character, narrative development and world. Set within Magic Pony, Toronto's premiere space for young contemporary art, attendees will create and sew their own original, plush companion to bring home.

Magic Pony & Narwhal Art Projects Present: Toronto Hearts Japan

Narwhal Art Projects, Invisible-Friends and friends are excited to host Toronto Hearts Japan, a fundraiser for our far-away loves.
Our hearts have been broken by news of devastated towns and people separated from their homes and families, and we want to help. This event lets all of us who feel a special connection to Japan lend a hand in our own way. All proceeds will be donated to The Red Cross and to helping rebuild the Birdo Flugas Artist Centre and Community in Shiogama.

Toronto Hearts Japan is an exhibition, silent auction, and two (count them!) parties at the beloved Gladstone Hotel (with DJ Paul E. Lopes and DJ Jun). Featuring works from local to international artists (and other surprises too), everybody can find a way to offer our hearts to Japan and help them soldier on.

Tado : "Lily: The Littlest Cannibal" NOW ONLINE!

Finally! I have been dying to see the Tado show at Magic Pony, and now it seems like most all the pieces are up online, YAY!
It's FANTASTIC! Tado never dissapoints... they are so amazing... quickly moving into my favorite artists spot. I bought some of the new blind box toys when I was in Hawaii (I'll take photos of them tonight) and they are just wonderful! So much detail and all the figures are so cute and original.

The pieces available at Magic Pony are in an array of mediums- there's Gocco prints, Giclee's, and even original acrylic paintings and hand carved wood sculptures. Man, there isn't a piece in this whole show that I wouldn't love to own.

YAY FOR TADO!!!
