Junko Mizuno "Sol: Seasonal Print Collection" at Gallery Nucleus

Junko Mizuno is releasing a fantastic new set of seasonal holiday inspired prints with Gallery Nucleus. Details for the print release are below, and you can also catch Junko this Saturday at Gallery Nucleus for the show's opening reception, Aug 16, 7:00PM - 10:00P

SOL is a print collection of 12 original works centered around capturing the timeless iconographies of various holidays throughout the calendar year. With SOL, Junko Mizuno has taken her favorite holidays from both American and Japanese cultures and created a dozen unique artworks bound in a removable album sized format. The print set is sealed in a flower petal case and limited to only 1000, not to be reprinted.

Each print vividly encapsulated Junko Mizuno’s trademark aesthetics within every holiday design. The artist’s limited color palette fill every illustration from corner to corner with the back side of each print containing an image of the original pencil sketch and a description of the holiday being featured. Mizuno takes care to display the exact date of the holiday as well as the Japanese translation of the holiday’s name—SOL fits in a standard album sized frame and is a wonderful print collection that is perfect for the changing seasons.

There will be 30 ultra limited signed SOL editions that contain an etched / hand embellished wooden ornament. By purchasing 1 of the 30 You are automatically entered to win an original ink drawing by Junko (shown in the thumbnails) After purchasing, you will receive a raffle number via email. The winning number will be announced on the Nucleus Facebook page after all 30 have sold!

The wonderful Junko Mizuno's new show, "Rising" currently on view at Gallery Nucleus is now online. Her work really continues to grow and change in beautiful ways. I love the color palette she uses in this show, and the softer details she's explored on her signature girls. If you're in LA, the show is on view until 10/13, and if not, you can check it out online, here.

Junko Mizuno's "Venus Cake"

Photobucket

There's a fantastic new solo exhibition by Junko Mizuno happening right now at Magic Pony's Narwhal Projects. Runs through April 20th.

From the press release:
VENUS CAKE
Junko Mizuno Solo Exhibition
Narwhal welcomes Japanese artist Junko Mizuno for her second Canadian exhibition Venus Cake : Junko Mizuno's Food Obsession. As the first body of work in her Food Obsession series, Mizuno takes us through a personal, psychedelic journey through delightfully dark food fetishes from an ornate whipped cream Ouroboros to fish carved sushi schoolgirls and a sadistically delicious pancake kitchen. With a decorative graphic sensibility that evokes both American and Japanese pop culture, Mizuno combines cuteness, gore and eroticism within an oeuvre that includes comics, painting, drawings, animation and toys. Influenced by vintage shojo manga, folktales, horror and pop art, Mizuno creates fairy tales where erotically adorable pin-ups prance naively through imagined worlds, battling and cohabiting with the dark energy that surrounds them. With realized sexuality, hunger and violence, Mizuno’s girls combat fatal relationships with desires and demons. Playing off our fascination with the cute and the macabre, strong-willed vixens flaunt their charms, and fight for their beliefs, misfit protagonists for the modern day woman.

Photobucket

There is also an installation by my super-talented friend Rick O'Brien!

Details:
This new work by artist Rick O'Brien observes the sum of who we are, the fundamental elements we collectively share, and the individual experiences which showcase the unique.

It is the differences that present a perceived danger to the established norm. By creating a defense mechanism which alienates effort, we are free to admire and then condemn those attempting to better themselves. The innocent act of self exploration provides us the obstacles we must endure through life.

Human frailty and fortitude are at the heart of most of O'Brien's work. A Wolf in the Fold embodies the struggle between human ambition and toil, and the boundaries we impose.
