Prints @GR2

Even though I really really want to go to the Print show at GR2, I know it's a bad idea. They have Murakami prints, Chiho Aoshima prints, and Ai Yamaguchi prints. Eeep, I must stay away or I'll have to get a night job!

Chiho Aoshima

Love this piece by Chiho Aoshima for the 'Through the Looking Glass' show now going on in the Netherlands. Her work always amazes me.

Pretty is as Pretty Does

KaiKai Kiki artist Chiho Aoshima is part of a group show at the SITE Santa Fe Art Space entitled "Pretty is as Pretty Does". Based on the phrase "pretty is as pretty does", used to describe a pretty girl with a nasty dispostion, the artists in this show manage to make superficially beautiful images with haunting undertones.

There's a lot of art that I am especially drawn to that would fit in this theme (the work of Junko Mizuno or Mizna Wada come to mind) and I'd love to see this exhibition in person!

Pretty is as Pretty Does runs through May 10th.

Royal-T Cafe

I'm sorry posting has been a little behind this week. I got chosen for jury duty for the next three weeks, so I have been at court all day and then working at night. It's been a long week! (2 more to go!)

I realized I mentioned that I went to the Royal-T cosplay cafe, but I never posted any photos! We went a few months back, and the art collection there was just amazing. I took a few photos but you really should pay the cafe a visit if you are in Los Angeles!



The cafe features pieces by artists like Yoshitomo Nara, Aya Takano, Chiho Aoshima, and Takashi Murakamai, among others.

KaiKai Kiki Marketplace

If I could win a shopping spree at any store in the whole world, it would be at the KaiKai Kiki Marketplace!

They have the most amazing selection of items from all the KaiKai Kiki artists, including Takashi Murakami, Chiho Aoshima, Aya Takano, Mr., Chinatsu Ban, and others! I want everything! The print selection is the most amazing- with really great prices. Of course, now that I am so excited about buying up everything on the site, I find that they will only ship to Japan. I am going to have to devise a plan to find a friend in Japan that I can have everything shipped to.

Chiho Aoshima

Kaikai Kiki collective artist Chiho Aoshima's work is always beautfiul, and her newer works are no exception. You can see some of her most recent pieces on the Galerie Emannuel Perrotin website, here.

Her work is defnitely evolving over the years, away from the more digital derived pieces into works created with watercolors. It's giving her haunting images a much more personal feel, and I am eager to see how her work continues to change.

Takashi Murakami +

My favorite artist collective, KaiKai Kiki, run by the fantastic Takashi Murakami, has a new show entitled 'Takashi Murakami +' at Fabrick Gallery in Hong Kong.
Every Murakami show I have ever seen has been completely mind-blowing, and I wish I could see this new exhibit, which includes another of my favorites, Chiho Aoshima, as well as the KaiKai Kiki artist Mr.

Giant Robot Wishlist

Giant Robot is probably my favorite place to shop in LA. They've expanded quite a bit since I first started shopping there, and now they have GR2 (the best gallery in LA), GR Silverlake, and GRSF (San Francsico), and GRNY (New York). The Divine Gas by Chiho Aoshima

My desire to visit Boston grows daily:
The Divine Gas, Aoshima's work for the ICA, depicts a giant girl lying in a lush landscape. The setting seems idyllic and serene-butterflies flutter, a deer nestles near her foot, a couple frolics hand-in-hand. Meanwhile, a billowing cloudscape, lorded over by a genie creature, emerges from her bottom. A few figures sit nestled in the clouds, while others tumble toward the ground. Like an updated version of Hieronymus Bosch's Garden of Earthly Delights (c. 1500), the mural is mysterious tale of good and evil. An elegant and energetic fusion of opposing forces—beauty and darkness, the natural and supernatural, humor and earnestness—The Divine Gas invites viewers into Aoshima's fantastical daydream.

KaiKai Kiki is home to my most favorite artists, including Chinatsu Ban, Aya Takano, Takashi Murakami, and Chiho Aoshima. Here are some pieces by Chiho Aoshima; who always inspires me with her imagery of nature, the cycle of life, and meaning of earth. Looking at her work makes me feel as though her imagination has flown through space, delved into the depths of the earth, spoken with the trees, lived among the reptiles, and then returned to inspire her hand to draw.
