“I Know What You're Thinking...”

Eek! This show is going to be uh-may-zing! “I Know What You're Thinking...” opens March 18th at Sloan Fine Arts in New York. The show features the work of three of my favorite artists- Caroline Hwang, Seonna Hong, and Saelee Oh. Saelee has quite a few preview pieces up on her blog, here. This is going to be a beautiful show and I am sad not to be able to see it in person!

Tiny Showcase has a new print by Caroline Hwang, entitled "For every field, there's a mole." Limited to only 100 pcs and only $20, the proceeds for this print will benefit Susan G. Komen For the Cure.

Caroline Hwang : In Anxious Anticipation

Caroline Hwang has just completed a lovely new zine, and it's available in her webshop. The zine is only $7, but there's also a deluxe edition available for $30 which includes a print and handmade packagaing. She's also got a 2 person show coming up in October in Copenhagen- there's some really beautiful preview photos of her work on her blog.

Caroline Hwang in 2 new shows

The ever lovely Caroline Hwang has work in 2 new group shows. The first is the show 'Girls' at Open Space Gallery in New York. There's not any photos up online of shis show, at least not yet, but there are two prints by Caroline available in the Open Space webstore, here.


The second show, also in New York (no fair!) is 'Crocodile Tears' at GRNY. This show features works sizes 5x7 or smaller by over 50 different artists. This show isn't up online yet either, but I'll let you know when it is. Giant Robot always has the best art, at incredibly reasonable prices, so I am sure there's going to be some great work available in this show.


Caroline is one of my favorite artists- her work is always gorgeous, and if you haven't seen it in person yet, you have to experience it first hand to see all the layers and different methods she uses in her pieces. It's the fabric and embroidery that are always especially wonderful. She's also got a new 'zine in the works, which she says will be done by the end of the month.

'Thread as the Line' in Arlington, VA

For those of you who I haven't met personally - Daniel here, Courtney's live-in boyfriend. She asked that I jump in and help post for the next couple weeks while she balances a heavy workload. Although I'm relatively new to her world of wonderfully quirky and delightful interests (I was raised in a house where the walls were kept white, and barren), I like to think I'm learning fast.

That being said, a few months ago I learned real fast that 'sweater by favorite artist + new dryer = unhappy girlfriend.' A while back Courtney posted about her (most favoritest-ever) matching Caroline Hwang sweater and skirt by RVCA's Artist Network Program. After moving into our new pad, I didn't really anticipate the brute force that our new laundry room was packing, and while I thought I was doing a good thing, I was actually warping her favorite sweater to Bilbo Baggins size.

Anyhow, all the recent talk prompted me to look online for a new sweater for Courtney. While, I wasn't able to find one, I did come across some awesome new works by Caroline and friends, on display now in the 'Thread as the Line:Contemporary Sewn Art' show at the Ellipse Arts Center in Arlington , VA.



The show also features new works by TKB favorite, Megan Whitmarsh!

Also, opening today in Brooklyn at the Cinders Gallery, Caroline has works on display at the 'Don't Paint With Your Teeth' exhibit, a group show of ballpoint pen, pencil and sharpie drawings, that runs until June 8th (damn, this girl is busy!).

Caroline Hwang : Salvage

Caroline Hwang is one of my favorite artists. Her work is so personal, and so real, it makes you feel as though you are sneaking a peek at a world you aren't meant to be a part of. Looking at her pieces always gives me a sense of nostalgic romance... the aches associated with love, either found or lost. I think the fact that she incorporates fabric, and stitching or embroidery into the pieces makes it even more romantic. Her solo show is up online now, here. There are a lot of pieces still available, and I am trying very hard to be a good girl and not scoop one up...

Embroidery & Stitching in Art

I (attempt) to sew, so when artists mix textiles, embroidery, and quilting into their work, I'm always drawn to it. I love the way it evokes nostalgia, yet it can still be something that looks quite new and modern. Caroline Hwang is, of course, one of my favorites, and so is Saelee Oh. (Saelee has a new print available in her online shop, Lemonade Maid.) I just discovered Katie Henry, (image above) on the Free People Blog, and her work is incredible as well. Megan Whitmarsh does amazing embroidery work, I love her Yetis!

Caroline Hwang's art is beautifully vulnerable and always manages to tug at my heart strings. I have been a fan of her work for quite awhile, and the clothing she designed with RVCA awhile back is still the coolest thing I have hanging in my closet. Her new site is lovely and has a large collection of her work. She also has a few shows to note, one up currently and one upcoming.

Random updates of things goin' on:
GR2 is hosting UglyCon through January 2nd. Cinders Gallery, in Brooklyn, is showcasing "Dirty Hands", a group print show with pieces by Mark Todd, Esther Pearl Watson, Swoon, Saelee Oh, Souther Salazar, Caroline Hwang, Rachell Sumpter, and lots more. GRSF has "Printed Matter" up now, and I am so sad I am not in SF to go see it. Artists include; Alvin Buenaventura, Brendan Monroe, Bwana Spoons, Eric Nakamura, Evah Fan, Little Friends of Printmaking, PCP, Saejean Oh, Saelee Oh, and more.

'Hey There Lonely Girl'

Caroline Hwang and Suzannah Sinclair have a show opening this weekend at New Image Art Gallery in LA. Caroline's work is always gorgeous, I love her mix of fabric, embroidery, and painting. She did a line for RVCA last year, and I wear the skirt and sweater all the time. This show will definitely be worth checking out!
