Scion Presents : Ed Emberley & Friends

This show looks FANTASTIC!

Scion presents: Ed Emberley & Friends

July 17 - August 7, 2010

Ed Emberley's legendary drawing books inspired a generation of kids to become artists. In this show, Ed Emberley displays his original 1970's mockups alongside five grown-up artists who were influenced by him.

Curated by Caleb Neelon, the exhibition features Ed Emberley as well as five artists who were inspired by him. The artists include Raul Gonzalez, Seonna Hong, Matt Leines, Christopher Kline and Saelee Oh.

For "Ed Emberley & Friends," each artist will create a six-foot-by-six-foot wood panel that is a mash-up of their own style and that of Ed Emberley's instructional drawing books. The tribute paintings will be exhibited alongside examples of each artist's individual work. After the show, each of the large painted panels will be donated for long-term display in children's hospitals around the United States.

Opening Reception: Saturday, July 17, 2010 | 7-10pm

+2 at Sloan Fine Art

Lovely art show happening right now at Sloan Fine Art in NY. Featuring work by some of my favorites, including Seonna Hong, Caroline Hwang, Mark Ryden, Evah Fan, and lots more. See more details and the show pieces here.
On view June 20 to July 18

Pieces featured in this post (from top to bottom) Seonna Hong, Caroline Hwang, and David O'Brien

Similarities anyone?

Earlier this month I posted about the Thomas Han flyer that I felt resembled Miss Van's artwork much too closely.

In a similar vein, I found a post about the Portuguese artist Susana Romão on NotCot.org and I have to say that she took Seonna Hong's character exactly as it appears on Seonna's 2006 painting 'A Bear of a Bear'. She changed the dress to red, as the dress appears on the painting 'Self Defeating'.

These kinds of works should not go unnoticed. If she was trying to pay homage to Seonn'a characters, then credit should have been given.

“I Know What You're Thinking...”

Eek! This show is going to be uh-may-zing! “I Know What You're Thinking...” opens March 18th at Sloan Fine Arts in New York. The show features the work of three of my favorite artists- Caroline Hwang, Seonna Hong, and Saelee Oh. Saelee has quite a few preview pieces up on her blog, here. This is going to be a beautiful show and I am sad not to be able to see it in person!

Seonna Hong "Viscery loves Company"

Seonna Hong's last show, 'Viscery loves Company' was early this past summer at the KaiKai Kiki Gallery in Tokyo. Consequently, I couldn't attend, although I would have loved to have gone. I just looked at a few of the pieces from this show on Seonna's website, and they are stunning. I love the way she paints a looming sense of danger, while the subjects are usually always innocent little girls. She plays with the sense of naivety in a way that's very unique and captivating.

There's a gorgeous print of Seonna's for sale at Subliminal Projects.

Yosemite Studiomates @ Grass Hut

I really want to visit Portland, and the two main reasons are Grass Hut (the gallery run by Bwana Spoons and Justin "Scrappers" Morrison) and Moshi Moshi.
I was looking at my friend Marty's blog, who lives in Portland now, and he mentioned a great show that is going on at Grass Hut. You can purchase some of the pieces online, here.
I don't know how I didn't know about it- Souther Salazar and Seonna Hong are two of my must-blog-about artists!

Here is the show info:
SOUTHER SALAZAR

ESTHER PEARL WATSON

MARTHA RICH

SEONNA HONG

MARK TODD

They all share a studio in Los Angeles county. And they are all bringing art to hang in a show at Grass Hut in June. This show is going to squirt amazingness into your eyes and hearts.

(All the work shown in this post is by Souther)

Seonna Hong's "Viscery Loves Company" Opens Tomorrow in Tokyo!

Adding to the list of ten million reasons to visit Japan, Los Angeles based, and 2004 Emmy Ward Winning (?!) artist Seonna Hong's "Viscery Loves Company" show opens tomorrow at the Kaikai Kiki Gallery (of Murakami's ever-expanding art empire) in Tokyo.

On a side note - sorry I nuked your Seonna Hong Caroline Hwang cardigan to toddler size in the dryer babe!!

Seonna Hong

Seonna Hong has an incredible new show up in NY at Oliver Kamm/ 5BE Gallery. The show, entitled "Our Endless Numbered Days" features bears, black birds, and horses in a doomsday style, foreboding collection of work. Also featured in this show is a collection of images using paint and thread to create an amazing sense of transition and movement.
Seonna will soon be exhibiting with KaiKai Kiki, as the first US based artist in this collection of Japanese artisans working under Takashi Murakami.

"Our Endless Numbered Days" is up currently, and will run through May 26th.

The Bliss Express Show

After reading Masrade's post, I am really eager to go see:
The Bliss Express Show
October 7 - October 25

Gallery Nucleus and Guu Press are proud to present The Bliss Express Show, marking the first release of the art book Bliss Express: Illustrating Happiness (December 2006).
In Bliss Express, 21 of today’s most striking pop artists explore the idea of happiness. From Japan and Korea to China, France and North America, they evoke fashion, rock ’n’ roll, nature, graffiti, movies, money, sex and Sunday morning cartoons in tackling a universal question. The author, Althea Chia, says, “Our hope is to have produced a book that just about anyone, art connoisseur or not, would want to pick up from the table and look through, and then, leave, taking something—at least one thing—from it.”
Bringing together short stories, artist quotations, biographies and over 280 images in full color, Bliss Express paints the normalities and absurdities of modern life. It is a reel of snapshots of the artists’ visions and obsessions—their unhinged, funny, heartbreaking journey to that elusive inner state of grace.
The exhibition, characterized by marked pleasure and wrenching aesthetics, will showcase the Bliss Express artists’ evocative works for all to view in the flesh.
