Yosemite Studiomates @ Grass Hut

I really want to visit Portland, and the two main reasons are Grass Hut (the gallery run by Bwana Spoons and Justin "Scrappers" Morrison) and Moshi Moshi.
I was looking at my friend Marty's blog, who lives in Portland now, and he mentioned a great show that is going on at Grass Hut. You can purchase some of the pieces online, here.
I don't know how I didn't know about it- Souther Salazar and Seonna Hong are two of my must-blog-about artists!

Here is the show info:

They all share a studio in Los Angeles county. And they are all bringing art to hang in a show at Grass Hut in June. This show is going to squirt amazingness into your eyes and hearts.

Giant Robot Biennale

Tons of congrats to Giant Robot for 50 issues! I am a huge GR fan, and I frequent the store and amazing art shows quite often. This weekend is their big Biennale celebration at the Japanese American Museum in Little Tokyo. The show features the works of some of my favorites, including Apak, Souther Salazar, Saelee Oh, David Choe, and more.

Here's to another 50 issues!

Souther Salazar : Make it Real

I am a HUGE fan of Souther Salazar. His work is so amazing, especially when you get to see it in person. It has so many different layers, with little scraps of paper, and tape mixed into the pieces. He is also super nice, and has a lovely little working space in Eagle Rock. I would love to own more of his work- currently I own 'Manatee Cove' below, and his Giant Robot skate deck.
I am super excited for his upcoming show at Giant Robot in a few weeks.
The press release is below:

Make It Real at GR2, October 13 - October 31
Reception: Saturday, October 13, 6:30 -10:00
GR2

Giant Robot is proud to present the art of Souther Salazar at GR2.

Souther Salazar lives and works in Los Angeles. His artwork reinterprets the world making it a mythical place of carnivals, lost cities, giant insects, dinosaurs, and a variety of other animals. Souther mixes media, adding layers upon layers of storytelling making his work something to explore for hours. Souther Salazar graduated with a BFA from Art Center in Pasadena.

Make It Real was inspired by a long drive and wandering mind. Souther imagined stories, scenes, places, and things that made him feel positive and constructive. These thoughts are manifested in six large paintings: five 30" x 48" landscapes and one 48" x 48" square.

The show will end on October 31, allowing key works to appear at a Giant Robot-curated art show at the Japanese American National Museum.

Manatee Cove :)

Souther Salazar : Space Cadets

I am so excited for Souther Salazar's upcoming solo show. If you are in NY, please go support this super-talented artist.
Here's the press release!

Jonathan Levine Gallery (NY) Presents:
Souther Salazar
Space Cadets
Project Room: Solo Exhibit

June 23rd - July 21st
Opening Reception:
Saturday, June 23rd, 5pm - 9pm

Jonathan LeVine Gallery is proud to announce Space Cadets, a solo exhibit of new works by Souther Salazar. This exhibition will be the artist’s first solo show at Jonathan LeVine Gallery and his largest exhibition to date. For Space Cadets, Souther Salazar presents an alternate universe, where nothing is realistic and yet everything is familiar. His exhibition includes large-scale mixed media works on panel, ink renderings on paper, and sculptures created using a variety of materials and found objects.

In his latest body of work, Souther Salazar explores the relationship between reality and the imagination, merging the two realms to create an adventurous new world. Tapping into his interior monologue, Salazar blends daydreaming with stream-of-consciousness techniques to create his characters and environments. For Salazar, what one perceives as a lack of focus, or being “spacey”, is conversely an acute sense of the time and space in which one exists.

In his artistic process, Salazar switches from working in modes of extreme control to inviting chance and flux. He juxtaposes rich details of recognizable things, such as weeds, antennas, and chimneys over tactile layers of collage, acrylic, and ink, celebrating spontaneity and the process of exploration with medium and subject matter. To further draw the viewer into his creations, Souther develops his stories beyond the two-dimensional plane into sculptural form. An installation of paintings in boxes and shelves with figures made of papier-mâché and fire-baked clay invites the viewer to use their imagination to discover hidden stories whose narratives multiply upon closer inspection.

Souther Salazar : Above the Influence

Seen the cool Above the Influence ads all over TV? They were designed by one of my favorite artists, Souther Salazar. Souther has a really recognizable style- at first I was worried someone had ripped him off! However, after some research, I found out that he designed 5 ads for Above the Influence- rad!
