Calling all carnies: the next gig to roll into town is Circus: Folke, a two-person exhibition by California-based ‘artist sisters’ Miss Mindy and CJ Metzger. An exploration of the Circus, its characters and all associated nostalgia, Circus: Folke will undoubtedly offer us a peek into a most spectacular tent.

Both artists hail from Los Angeles. Mindy an inker, painter, illustrator and sculptor, her growing list of clients includes Warner Brothers, Hard Rock Café, Mindstyle and Nickelodeon Animation. CJ Metzger’s iconic painting, illustration, design and writing has been sought out by such brands as Neiman Marcus, Hot Topic, and the LA Times. Uniting their passion for characters and storytelling with their unique design sensibilities, the sisters create an uber-artistry that leaves a lasting impression.

Red Queen & White Rabbit by Miss Mindy for Vinylmation

Holy cow! These customs by Miss Mindy are so amazing! I loved seeing her process pics on her blog (here). These really are some of the best customs I have seen- I love the flocked detail on the bunny and the tiny Alice scene in his belly!

Holiday Jewel Box & The Artist Sisters @ Leanna Lin's Wonderland

Leanna Lin's Wonderland in Eagle Rock is an awesome bead & gift shop. I first went there for the Spicy Brown 'Lucky Show' and I was so impressed with the cute selection of items! This weekend is Leanna's first every Holiday Jewel Box trunk show featuring handmade jewelery, and you can also still see the works on display by Miss Mindy & CJ Metzger. Details here!

The Kokeshi: From Folk Art to Art Toy

The Kokeshi exhibit at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles opens this weekend. The exhibition will be presented in three sections: traditional, contemporary American; and custom. Exploring the kokeshi doll from it's initial Japanese Folk art roots to it's rising popularity in today's art and toy culture, this show is filled original dolls from some amazing artists.
Some of my favorites include APAK, Amy Sol, Bubi Au Yeung, Camilla Engman, CJ Metzger, PCP, Jeremiah Ketner, Julie West, Miss Mindy, Noferin, and Tado.

It's sure to be incredible! Runs through October 4th.

CJ Metzger & Miss Mindy Summer Open House

This Saturday, The Artist Sisters, CJ Metzger and Miss Mindy, will host an open studio event. Mindy will have her new book, “Miss Mindy’s Sassy Paper Doll Bonanza!” and there's sure to be lovely art galore.

Where the Wild Art Is!

Who didn't love Maurice Sendak's 'Where the Wild Things Are' when they were growing up? This new show at the Wonderful World Art Gallery in Los Angeles plays tribute to the book and all it's monsters!

The show features new work by 12 artists, including Miss Mindy, CJ Metzger, David Flores, Kathleeen Lolley, Luke Feldman and others. There is even some original Maurice Sendak pieces available. The opening reception is Thursday, November 13th.

I collect kokeshi dolls, and I love how they always have different expressions and cute little faces, just like matryoshkas. I thought a while ago how fun it would be to have all my friends paint a blank Kokeshi. Subtext in San Diego had the same idea, and next month "Kokeshi" opens, featuring 75 artists from 13 countries. Julie West, Miss Mindy, Audrey Kawasaki, and more. What a cool show!!

United Love Project @ Thinkspace

Thinkspace has a great show opening this weekend, Phase 4 of the 'United Love Project'. Here is the press release:


An emotionally influenced experiment examining the broken heart. Each individual artist will revisit a past relationship through their medium (illustration, painting, photography, etcetera)

The project will be supplemented with a book, which will feature each original artistic expression accompanied with interviews, short stories, or journal entries regarding the story behind the conceptual recollection.

Some of the participating artists are: Angry Woebots, Camillla Engman, CJ Metzger, Miss Mindy, and Melissa Contreras.
