"Quick and Painful" Prints

Photobucket

For some people, their favorite way to showcase the work of their favorite artists is on their own body. I've often thought about covering myself in tattoos from Miss Van, or Tado, or Junko Mizuno. The traveling show Quick & Painful let's collectors get tattoos done of special images created for the show by some of the best artists around. Additionally, you can buy the images as prints (details below) and there's some great work available in the Hope Gallery Tattoo webshop.

The “Quick and Painful” Series of Giclee Prints are 11" x 14" and printed on beautiful 300 gram cold press watercolor paper with archival pigment inks. These prints are exclusively available at Hope Gallery and are very limited.

Each Print set comes with an official certificate embossed with the Hope Gallery Seal of Authenticity. Prints are packaged in a crystal clear fitted bag with firm white backing. Shipped flat.

I've included some of my favorite image collections here, from Tado, Tokidoki, Tara McPherson, Junko Mizuno, DevilRobots and Cammila d'Errico

Sweet Streets @ Gallery Nucleus

Another great show opens this weekend at Gallery Nucleus. 'Sweet Streets' is inspired by Japanese street fashion, and features work by some of my favorite artists!

SWEET STREETS
August 29, 2009 – September 14, 2009
Opening Reception, August 29th 7pm - 11pm

From the Press release:
By combining traditional and modern styles and breaking away from conventional trends, the youth of Japan have blazed a fashion movement. Adding their own creative touches by mixing old with the new while customizing and combining the homemade with designer labels, their look result in the unexpected and avant-garde and in turn created a truly diverse subculture. Art-inspired fashions and fashion-inspired art is one of the most creative symbiotic relationships of our generation.
Co-Curated by CARO, and sponsored by Hi-Fructose Magazine and Kirin Beer, this show will feature work by some of today’s top emerging artists representing their own original take of the infamous and eccentric fashion movement that continues to evolve.

Come out to Nucleus for the celebration of breaking new grounds in creativity and to dive into the SWEET STREETS of Japan.

Opening Night features include:
Free exhibition music samplers to the first 100 attendees.
Dress up to receive 15% off select store merchandise.
Artist & ‘Harajuku’ models in attendance.

SDCC Loot

This was the best year of SDCC I have ever done. People showed me so much love and were so kind with their encouragement! Being a self employed artist means I don't often get feedback, so going to a show and being so supported is just amazing. Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who came to the Bored Inc. booth! It's because of all of you that I get to do what I love!

It wasn't all work- I did manage to sneak away for a bit and score some goodies! I got two prints from Junko Mizuno's 'Tender Succubus' show at Gallery Nucleus (now I have all 3!), lots of Marshalls by 64 Colors, James Jarvis' King Ken from Strangeco, the TokiDoki SDCC colorways of Captain Coco and Skeletrino and Skeletrina, a print and an original Mr. Toast, and a super cute pea goodie bag from our pals at Conduct Happiness.

Two of my biggest scores came from Kid Robot. I've hated on the attitudes of their employees in the past, but I have to say that the people working the booth at Comic Con this year were SO nice, and even let me trade my duplicate Junko Mizuno 'Pure Trance' Umeko & Takeko duplicates for Rika! So stoked! I also got a few of the new Tado Fortune Pork Plush and also got Cloak from Cannibal Funfair.

I'll upload more pics soon, and I am working on getting all the new product onto my site. A lot of stuff sold out, so if you don't see what you are looking for, be patient, I just have to make more!

TokiDoki Gelaskins @ Urban Retro UK

I recently posted about the awesome selection of prints and posters in the Urban Retro UK online shop.

Since we've been on a bit of a TokiDoki kick lately, I thought it would be a good time to mention that they've also got a terrific selection of TokiDoki gelaskins for your phone and laptop. Super cute!

Check out the whole store actually- clothes, toys, lots of cool stuff!

More Simone Legno @ Target (& Paul Frank too)

But wait, there's more! A second trip to a larger Target led me to the Simone Legno back to school section. It's full of binders, book covers, highlighters, pencils- anything you need in the way of school supplies.

Also appearing at your neighborhood Target? Paul Frank! Again, only in the girl's section (come on Target - women wear cute graphics too!) and it's a limited selection, but I tried a hoodie on and it's as nice as the PF Hoodies I've bought in their stores (for half the price). Check online for a better selection of PF stuff.

Target's on a roll... do I see 'Gwen Stefani' for Target coming soon?

Kawaii goes Mainstream with TokiDoki & Friends With You at Target

So, I went to Target today and I was kinda blown away. Apparently cute, kawaii characters have made it to mainstream- the cheap & affordable mainstream. I am not entirely sure how I feel about it...

Simone Legno's new tees for Target are interesting. He didn't call them 'TokiDoki' because I am assuming that he still wants you to buy your $150 LeSportsac bag, and then head over to Target and also pick up a tee for $7.99. It's also interesting that it's in the kid's section. It's still a stigma that cute characters must be for kids. Online, they aren't marketed to kids, but all I could find in the store were 2 tees in the girl's section. The bags online are $19.99 and look to be about the same quality as my expensive LeSportsac TokiDoki purse.

They've also got tees by "Kawaii Island" which is the new mainstream brand by Friends With You. Check out that hang tag, so cute! They are also not using their well known brand name on this less expensive line, and it's also being marketed to kids.

There's also this shirt by "Extra Frosting" which looks a little too much like Loyal Army to me.

Original by Loyal Army:

So, high end character artists are dividing up their branding to appeal to both high end and mass market. Is this smart? Do you feel like your expensive TokiDoki items are less valuable now? Or are you happy just to be able to buy TokiDoki images on a tee for cheap? Will this affect their brand sustainability in the long run? For example, will LeSportsac quit making bags with TokiDoki art on them because they will feel that this is a conflict? I am curious to hear your thoughts, and to see how this will affect these brands long term.

My Little Pony Project Auction

Tado Pony

Okay folks, this is one of the best lineups for a charity auction EVER. I was lucky enough to see both the Junko Mizuno and the Catalina Estrada ponies at Comic Con this year, and they are gorgeous. Not normal pony size either- these are huge! This is such a cool way to purchase an original piece of art from some of the best artists in the world. I don't know how high the bids will go, but as of right now, the opening prices are very tempting.

Proceeds for the Little Pony Project acution will go to Give Kids the World Village, a resort in Orlando that hosts children with life-threatening illnesses and their families for a cost-free stay and visit to the Central Florida theme parks and attractions.

See all the ponies on the Charity Folks website. You'll be amazed at the lineup of artists and celebrities- including Junko Mizuno, TADO, Catalina Estrada, TokiDoki, Jon Burgerman and... are you ready... John Stamos! Hahahahahaha!
